Abia State University Alumni Association North America is a non-profit organization recognized under the IRS Section 501c(3) headquartered in the State of Maryland. It is an Association of graduates or more broadly, of former students of Abia State University Uturu, Abia State Nigeria that reside in North America. The vision was initiated by Christian J Okorie and the organization was eventually formed on April 2nd, 2015 by Christian J Okorie, Chima Nzekwe, Vivian Umeugo and Ijeoma Emeka Ngobili to foster a spirit of loyalty and promote the general welfare of Alumni and students. The Association provides a variety of benefits and services that help Alumni maintain connection to the parent institution and its graduates. With the help of the above Pioneer members who served as interim administrators, the Association was able to achieve its goals and objectives . The Association hosted its first General Meeting on April 12th, 2015 and was subsequently Launched officially. Many vital issues were discussed; most importantly to constitute and appoint members of the “Constitution Committee”. The Constitution Committee was assigned with the task of drafting the Constitution which was completed and adopted on December 27th, 2015. The members of the Constitution committee were as follows
On January 15th, 2016, the association elected its first “Executive Council” which had the following Alumni serve in the respective positions
The association has embarked on several successful events such as Annual Picnic on September 5th and support of members in different capacities. The Association was recognized as a 501c(3) non-profit organization on July 17th, 2018. The Association traced its roots on August 17th, 2018, undertaking the major assignment of hosting its first inaugural convention at Hilton Baltimore BWI Hotel. In attendance were the current Vice-Chancellor of the University Prof. Uchenna Ikonne, other Vice-Chancellors, members of the school Administration, Nigerian Ambassador to the United States, Hon. Justice Sylvanus A Nsofor , an outstanding number of Alumni with their family and friends. The convention was a huge success and the association was able to carry out its first project of donating 40 All-in-One Computers to the benefit of students and staff of the University.
